Tax Payers to Lose $25 Billion on Auto Bailout

The new estimates are in and the cost of socializing GM and Chrysler’s poor management and unreasonable unions? At least $25 billion. I’ll bet it ends up being much more.

But no big deal. It’s just your money.

(From The Detroit News)

“The Treasury Department says in a new report the government expects to lose  more than $25 billion on the $85 billion auto bailout. That’s 15 percent higher  than its previous forecast.

In a monthly report sent to Congress on Friday, the Obama administration  boosted its forecast of expected losses by more than $3.3 billion to almost  $25.1 billion, up from $21.7 billion in the last quarterly update.

The report may still underestimate the losses. The report covers predicted  losses through May 31, when GM’s stock price was $22.20 a share.

On Monday, GM stock fell $0.07, or 0.3 percent, to $20.47. At that price, the  government would lose another $850 million on its GM bailout.”

This will be the standard for all manufacturing if Obummer is elected. Why don't they publish where that money went for accountability purposes? They would call it a UAW bait out then...

Ok this is just degenerating into silliness. Keynes was wrong. Forget the MSNBC/NPR soundbites. The only reason to do this is if wages are sticky which they need not be. What spurs growth is ingenuity. But trust me 95% of people you talk with will agree with you. Its why we are still in depression.

We need to get less reliant on oil and catch up with the other countries already ahead because they were smart enough to move on that! Tax breaks for the rich did not work to spur anything. It obviously needed to come in specific subsidies in order to spur "creativity".

You can't expect that during a recession, spending spurs growth, has been proven time and time again.

The article you quoted used the sales figures from Dec 2011. Since then there has been 12K more of them sold thereby spreading the cost of subsidies and tax credits. Those sales still saved jobs, made money and collected taxes. I understand your position on buying those others but the fact remains we need to develop and keep up with other countries when it comes to technology and I am sure they did not make a perfect car at first either. We need to prop up our economy not theirs. I am not against buying foreign cars because of their quality but we need to be less dependant on oil and MANY Americans absolutely refuse to buy foreign there is a market for American Hybrid Cars.

I'm unsure as to what you're talking about with the 80K- Look $250,000 worth of money was taken from tax payers- productive folks- and put into this car, which I might ad still has the tendency to catch on fire. They still haven't solved that problem though they've known about it for a year. It's theft- gussied up as "government investment." Of the number you site one in 5 is sold in California with an additional $7500 subsidy to the buyer, or in total $15,000. Also a good number of these cars were bought as fleet vehicles by governments which were forced to under regs. Even with all this that number is a disaster. Buy a Prius- Toyota makes a good clean car at a good price, orthe Camry Hybrid which is made entirely in the US, unlike the Volt.

Okay but some of that is in tax credits (no taxes would have been collected on a non existant company right) Again I point out, the employed middle class adds money to the budget while the jobs exist. And 18,663 Volts have been sold in the U.S. through July 2012. Their sales have tripled and I suspect that number will keep growing, I can't imagine an instant drop off in sales. So to date that means it has been 80K and going down right?

250K? for the Volt? please explain. And I still stand on the fact that those employees would have made more "governmental" liabilities had that bailout not taken place, making the amount of income the government drop even further! (Domino effect)

TIM: I suggest you think about being sucked in hating bankers. Thieves go where the money is. The govt co-oped the banks. See how it works? Bankers and govt officials were students at the same biz schools. School buddies linked a lifetime.

Watchy'all bitchin' 'bout? Americans LOVE getting cornholed by the guvmint. The only thing they like better is their secret lover the bankers, providing them the crack cocaine of credit while they provide the bankers with AALLLLLLLL the interest the banks can stand. Seriously. I have quit worrying about it. Americans LIKE being broke and controlled and bitchslapped by regulations at every turn. Sometimes when I think about how the average Republican loves their own version of socialist programs, I think I may vote for Obama just so's they can get a good hard eights years of real socialism and third world, Banana republic dictator leadership. Perhaps it will do the nation good to have their noses bloodied like we all know Obama is itching to do.

Using that logic we should also include the liabilities associated with the debt incurred to bail these companies out. The loss of productive economic capacity because these old uncompetative companies have taken productive capital out of the economy. The cost to Ford and Toyota not being able to buy up unproductive plants. The 250K of tax payer money that goes into each Chevy Volt. And that's just for starters.

does this exclude the tax money collected from the people still employed?
