As we have said many times, socialism and crony capitalism are sisters and good friends. Centralization is a key part of socialism and absolutely necessary for crony capitalism. The political class lives well, and the rest, well, they are the rest – particularly in Latin America.
Deny the marketplace free prices and shortages and general economic dysfunction are the inevitable result. Deny prices completely and sooner or later one will have complete collapse.
This can be offset for a time with terror, as we saw and see in the Soviet Union, North Korea, and in Cuba. But the end is the same. The questions now in Venezuela are how far is Maduro willing to go and how far CAN he go?
The video is in Spanish but the videographer’s translated comments from Facebook are below.
Socialism rules! Wonder if the sons and daughters of the political class will be going out into the fields?
As we say occasionally “crony capitalism” is a polite way of saying “fascism” or “fascism-lite.” Fascism is when corporations and the state partner up with each other for control. But it is always the state which is in charge. Mussolini didn’t bow to the owners of Alpha Romeo nor Hitler to the chiefs at Porsche.
And despite what some people unfortunately still believe fascism is indeed a form of socialism, the Nazis were of course the National Socialist Party.
An excellent report.
This is what Chavismo, socialismo, has wrought.
Venezuela is a country which is for the most part green and fertile. It’s tropical. It’s not exactly February in the Ukraine. And thank God.
Or $75 for 6.
Being a charitable person I think I should start a project which will bring chickens to this part of Latin America. What’s that you say? Chickens are all over Latin America, everywhere one looks in the countryside? Then why do eggs cost more than $10 apiece in Venezuela? Oh, that’s right, the government is a socialist government that doesn’t understand the simplest of market economics. So that makes sense.
Chavismo, the Venezuelan experiment in socialism is imploding in an ugly way. (Is there any other way for a society to implode?) People are hungry. The lights don’t work. Crime is off the charts. They can’t even make beer in Caracas anymore. And that is truly a desperate situation. Socialism without alcohol really is a horrible fate.
But just a few years ago many a privileged celebrity sang the praises of the “brave”
Apartment friendly potatoes.
Gardens are almost always a good idea. In a country like Venezuela which for the most part is quite verdant naturally and which has a completely dysfunctional economy this is especially the case.
Of course for urbanites (and a good part of the Venezuelan population is urban) to revert to subsistence farming is a challenge to say the least. Venezuela is in desperate need of economic liberalization. It is in desperate need of new leadership.
Oh, there’s a whole crew of Americans who were/are on the wrong side of this one. It would be sweet to see them sweat if it weren’t for the suffering of the Venezuelan people. (A country which should be rich.)
Viva la libertad! Viva Venezuela!
This is a unique dispatch. Anarcho-capitalists report from the heart of socialist Venezuela, a pretty risky endeavor.
The video is raw. Much of it is in Spanish. But this is real on the ground insight. The guy doing this must be a little bit nuts – thankfully. Kudos.
